Fluoride and the inconvenient tooth

“I am quite convinced that water fluoridation, in a not-too-distant future, will be consigned to medical history.”- Dr. Arvid Carlsson, Winner of the 2000 Nobel Prize for Medicine
I hope that someone can prove this post to be completely wrong and false, I really really do. The information I've learned about fluoride has me shaking my head - no, banging my head against a wall because it's is so ridiculously messed up.

FACTS:

  • Fluoride is slightly less toxic than arsenic, but more toxic than lead. (Clinical Toxicology of Commercial Products, 1984). Fluorine is the most negatively charged and most chemically active of all elements on earth, which means it loves to combine and recombine with other elements in its path, ever looking for the strongest bond, and reeking havoc all along the way by creating even more toxic combinations.
  • "A seven ounce tube of toothpaste, theoretically at least, contains enough fluoride to kill a small child." (From Proctor & Gamble, quoted in Fluoride the Aging Factor, p 14).
  • The fluoride that is added to our water is not pharmaceutical grade, like you would think but rather is a chemical byproduct of aluminum, steel, cement, phosphate, and nuclear weapons manufacturing. It is one of the most caustic of industrial chemicals and is the active toxin in rat poisons and roach powders.
  • Water fluoridation is a prime example of forced medication with no control over the dose or who gets it - it is not subject to any federal regulation.
A little history on fluoridation…

As I mentioned above fluoride is a by-product of the aluminum and phosphate fertilizer industries. It would cost these companies millions, possibly billions to store their toxic waste in Class 1 Hazardous Waste Sites. So in the 1940s top fluoride emitters such as the Aluminum Company of America (Alcoa) funded new research which claimed to show fluoride's supposed benefits. The US Military was producing excessive fluoride wastes from the Manhattan Project (the U.S. Military's program to create the first atomic bomb), so they were on board with this research. The plan to dump these toxic wastes in controlled doses into our drinking water was led by U.S. Public Health Services which, at the time was under the jurisdiction of Andrew Mellon (founder of Alcoa) and Oscar Ewing (a long time Alcoa lawyer). How convenient. They hired legendary spin doctor Edward Bernays, the "father of public relations" who had made smoking respectable for women, to convince Americans that fluoride was safe and necessary for dental health.

I wish I was making this up and that Harvard was a shady source.

Since the Public Health Service (PHS) endorsed fluoridation in 1950, over 2/3 of our nation's reservoirs have been fluoridated with sodium fluoride and hydrofluosilicic acid. These waste by-products are sold to communities at great profit and dumped into our drinking water. Since there is no regulatory oversight or standards for these products they often contain other wastes including radionuclides, cadmium, lead, arsenic, uranium and mercury. There have never been controlled clinical studies on how these fluoridating agents react in water systems (let alone in our bodies) despite the fact that fluoride is known for its ability to leach copper and lead from water pipes.

The EPA sets the standards for drinking water. While fluoride is almost equal in toxicity to both lead and arsenic (worse than lead, a little better than arsenic) the Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) for fluoride is 4000 parts per billion (ppb) compared to 15 ppb for lead and 10 ppb for arsenic. So ranked in level of toxicity, does this make sense to you?

  1. Arsenic: 10 ppb
  2. Fluoride: 4000 ppb
  3. Lead: 15 ppb
It's been a long time since I've taken a math class, but shouldn't the fluoride MCL be more like 12.5, not 4000?!

Since its creation in 1972 the EPA has consistently ignored the mounting evidence against fluoridation even raising the MCL from 2000 ppb to 4000 ppb in 1985 after a PHS panel of experts recommended much lower doses because of their concerns about fluoride's effects on the bones of children, on the heart, on dental fluorosis and for the overall lack of scientific data. When a National Toxicology Program study was released in 1989 and showed a clear link between fluoridation and cancer, the PHS and EPA quickly formed a new commission to review the findings. The final report disregarded the study and Dr. William Marcus, then Senior Science Advisor and Toxicologist in the Office of Drinking Water blew the whistle and released the true findings. The EPA fired him. Dr. Marcus eventually won his suit against the EPA and was joined by the rest of his co-workers, chemists, toxicologists and science professionals at the EPA who came out against fluoridation in 1997. The EPA still continues to drag their feet in all matters concerning the safety of fluoridation.

"If you tell a big enough lie and tell it frequently enough, it will be believed." - Adolf Hitler
Fluoride is linked to a slew of problems: weakened skeletal health, causes arthritis, toxic to the thyroid, calcifies the pineal gland, accelerates female puberty, harmful to male and female fertility, bad for kidney health, harmful to the cardiovascular system, and negative cognitive effects, to name a few. Most alarming to me is the association between fluoride exposure and reduced IQ. In a meta-analysis, researchers from Harvard School of Public Health and China Medical University in Shenyang, combined 27 studies and found strong indications that fluoride may adversely affect cognitive development in children. Scientist Anna L Choi concluded in the analysis "Thus, children in high fluoride areas had significantly lower IQ scores than those who lived in low fluoride areas."

But we need fluoride for healthy teeth, right?! Actually that is false propaganda too. In reality it causes dental fluorosis, which makes your teeth hard and brittle. You know those unsightly white streaks or spots that form on your teeth? Fluorosis. I used to think those white spots were from poor dental hygiene, but they're actually from drinking city water. I have a spot on one of my eye teeth, great. In more severe cases the teeth can become pitted and have brown, gray or black spots and the enamel can have an unusual shape. Dental fluorosis is a reflection of what's happening in our bones and is the first visible sign of fluoride poisoning. A 1995 study published in Pediatric Dentistry revealed that of 708 schoolchildren participating in the study in Asheville, NC 75% percent had fluorosis. A similar study published in Issue 20 of Pediatric Dentistry in 1998 showed that 69% of children in Boston had dental fluorosis ranging from mild to severe. "Common sense should tell us that if a poison circulating in a child's body can damage the tooth-forming cells, then other harm is also likely." Dr. John Colquhoun.

The WHO (World Health Organization) plainly shows that countries with or without fluoride have the same deterioration rate of the teeth. “All of the recent large-scale studies on fluoridation and tooth decay show that fluoridation does not reduce tooth decay. Studies from New Zealand, Canada, Europe, and the US have confirmed no difference in decay rates for permanent teeth of residents of fluoridated vs. non-fluoridated communities.” (sourceDespite dental pressure, 98% of western continental Europe has rejected, banned, or stopped fluoridation due to environmental, health, legal or ethical concerns. The only holdouts are England with 10% fluoridation and Ireland with 73% fluoridated - both countries under strong American influence. In 1977 the Danish Minister of Environment recommended against fluoridation because "no adequate studies had been carried out on its long-term effects on human organ systems other than teeth and because not enough studies had been done on the effects of fluoride discharges on freshwater ecosystems." Holland banned fluoridation after a group of medical practitioners presented evidence that it caused reversible neuromuscular and gastrointestinal harm to some individuals int he population. In 1978 the West German Association of Gas & Water Experts rejected fluoridation for legal reasons and because 'the so-called optimal fluoride concentration of 1 mg per L is close to the dose at which long-term damage to the human body is to be expected.'" Israel most recently rejected fluoridation and will end the practice this year citing health concerns. To quote the Israeli Minister of Health Yael German "It must be known that fluoridation can cause harm to the health of the chronically ill, including people who suffer from thyroid problems."

For those of us in communities that still fluoridate, the only way to remove it from your water is with a reverse osmosis filter. Reverse-Osmosis filtration is a purification process in which pressurized water passes through a thin semi permeable membrane that strips out a wide array of contanimant and inorganic impurities. Unfortunately a Brita won't do the job. We just bought this one from Costco and until Feb. 28th there is a $40 off rebate. Its the best water I've ever tasted and the difference is unbelievable - I wish we would have bought it years ago!

The good news for toothpaste is there is a natural sweetener called xylitol that prevents cavities. Xylitol stops bacteria in the mouth from emitting acid that causes tooth decay and cavities and makes it harder for bacteria to find shelter on the gums and teeth. We switched to Kiss My Face toothpaste, which is powered by xylitol and tea tree oil (also a powerful anti-bacterial). I highly recommend the "Amazing Mint Freshness" flavor and bought it at Whole Foods - we don't miss Crest one bit! For Olivia we have Tom's of Maine Children's "silly strawberry", but I am on the lookout for a replacement since it has sodium laurel sulfate as an ingredient.

I realize this post probably sounds like a crazy conspiracy theory and I wish it was. For me the evidence proves itself and credible resource after resource shares the same data - Harvard people, Harvard even says fluoride is dangerous! Please do a little research on your own and decide for yourself - here are some additional resources for you:
  • YouTube video of Dr. Bill Osmunson who promoted fluoridation for 25 years until his patients persuaded him to read the science "It was like a knee in the gut. Science has turned against fluoridation and we must stop adding fluoride to water."
  • Link to over 4,600 professionals (including 365 dentists and 566 MDs) urging that fluoridation be stopped because science shows fluoridation is ineffective and harmful.
  • Link to a Harvard study showing fluoridation lowers intelligence 7 IQ points.
  • Dentist Hardy Limeback, Ph.D, University of Toronto Professor and Head, Preventative Dentistry apologizes in this link for promoting fluoridation because toxicology research shows the purported benefits no longer outweigh the risks.
  • Link to the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT) website, which is a network of dental, medical and research professionals which supports the effort to inform consumers about health risks from water fluoridation.
  • If you want highly researched details, facts, studies, historical proof the book The Fluoride Deception is for you. From an Amazon review:"The Fluoride Deception" is a scathing indictment of how the U.S. medical community, big corporations, and the federal government, misled the American public for decades about the dangers of fluoride. Filled with scientific studies and historical documents, all fully annotated, Bryson mounts a point by point attack on the flimsy, fallacious arguments of pro-fluoride advocates."
  • Download a free copy of The Fluoride Debate - "we have juxtaposed the arguments presented by the American Dental Association with comments from many independent scientist who have examined the issue with an open mind."
